Quick guides for using iowii.

Manage accounts

Create your accounts, set the opening balance everything is counted from, and check whenever iowii's figures line up with your bank's.

  1. 1

    Create an account

Press New Account, name it, and pick a type. The type decides how the account is treated in calculations, especially net worth:

    • Checking — your everyday account.
    • Savings — money set aside.
    • Cash / Wallet — notes and coins outside the bank.
    • Investment — holdings and brokerage accounts.
    • Credit — credit cards, which count as debt.
    • Other — anything that does not fit above.
  2. 2

    Set the opening balance

The opening balance is your starting point: what the account held on a given date. From there, iowii adds and subtracts your transactions to reach the current balance.

TipThe date matters as much as the amount. Transactions before it are left out of the calculation — deliberately, so you do not count twice what the opening balance already included.

  3. 3

    Mark your main account

The star marks your primary account, the one pre-selected when you log a transaction. You can also give the account a primary category, which is then suggested in the form.

TipThe primary category only applies when it matches the transaction type on screen — an income category will not appear on the expense tab.

  4. 4

    Check against your bank

Under Check against your bank you type the balance your bank shows and iowii compares it with its own. If they differ, it breaks the difference down, naming how many transactions and how much each cause accounts for.

    • No account — transactions not assigned to any account.
    • Before the opening balance — transactions dated before your starting point.
    • Excluded from totals — transactions you marked not to count.
    • Split transaction — the original row of an expense you divided.
    • Scheduled — these have not happened yet, so your bank does not count them either.

TipScheduled items are shown for context only and never explain a difference. The other causes come with a button to fix the problem on the spot.

  5. 5

When your starting date is wrong

If a large share of your history falls before the opening-balance date, iowii warns that the date is probably wrong instead of listing it all as ordinary exclusions. A button moves it back to your oldest transaction.

TipThis warning shows even when the balances match. A correct total means little if half your history is being set aside.

  6. 6

    Keep several balances over time

Balance history lets you record more than one opening balance, each with its own date. Use it when you know the true figure at different points and want the calculation to re-anchor from each one.

  7. 7

    Bank connections via Plaid

Connect Bank imports accounts and transactions straight from your institution. Imported accounts and transactions show up in a Bank Connections section, with the bank's name, connection status, last sync date, and its linked accounts with their balances. A Disconnect bank button revokes iowii's access at the bank and permanently deletes the accounts and transactions imported by that connection — your manual accounts and transactions are never affected.

    • Connected — syncing normally.
    • Syncing — a sync is currently running.
    • Needs attention — you need to reauthorize the connection with your bank to keep syncing. A Reconnect Bank button reopens Plaid so you can confirm your credentials, without creating a new connection.
    • Failed — the last sync did not complete successfully.

TipTransactions your bank has not yet posted show a Pending badge in the transaction list, until the bank confirms them.

  8. 8

Link Plaid accounts to your accounts

After connecting a bank, imported accounts also show up in an Unlinked Bank Accounts section, under "My Accounts". iowii suggests a match when it finds one of your accounts with a similar name — just click Link. If there's no suggestion, pick an existing account from a search list or click Create new account to create one from the bank's data. One button links every account with no suggestion at once.

    • The bank's current balance is imported at the moment of linking, as if it were the account's opening balance from today onward.
    • Transaction history from before the link is not imported — only the balance from that day forward.
    • A linked account shows a Plaid label next to its name, and can be unlinked at any time without losing its balance history.
  9. 9

    Clear or delete an account

Clear transactions deletes that account's completed transactions — and both legs of any transfer — but leaves future scheduled items alone. Delete removes the account itself, behind a confirmation.

TipIf a No Account card appears, you have transactions with no account assigned. You can assign them all at once from there.
